Migrating from Drupal 5.x to 6.x

Forums:

I figured it would be a good idea to create a forum to talk about migrating from Drupal 5 to 6.

Basically I think there are a few steps we'll need to do to move to Drupal 6.

  1. Make as many 5.x modules up-to-date as possible
  2. Check each 5.x module for a 6.x version.
  3. For those which lack 6.x versions, locate replacement candidates (other modules which might do the same thing)
  4. Build a new theme for 6.x.

We also have a number of contrib modules from the very early days which were erroneously placed in /modules (instead of /sites/all/modules) - which should be moved to the correct location during our migration, whenever that happens.

I've started by exporting a list of modules installed on the server (enabled and disabled).  I've started to annotate this list so we know:

  • what modules we use
  • what we use them for
  • whether a 6.x version exists
  • which other 6.x modules could be used to do the same thing.

The list (an odf spreadsheet) is attached.  Feel free to update it and attach it to a response.

Drupal 7?

As of this date, there are about 150 "critical issues" left in Drupal 7. Devs expect Drupal 7 to be released this spring or summer. Once Drupal 7 is released, there will be no more updates to Drupal 5.

I think it could be a good idea to think about leapfrogging Drupal 6 and going straight to 7. D7 has bugs right now, for sure, but much of the rebuilding legwork could be embarked upon right now. This would save us having to do another complicated migration from D6 to D7 in another two years or so.

Update

Did some more work on the spreadsheet.
