Dinner and a Movie

Dinner and a Movie is a social way to share tasty food and watch great films.  On Sunday evenings you can eat a home cooked meal prepared by volunteer chefs, and then watch a movie that they've chosen to complement the food (or maybe the other way around).

Dinner is at 6pm, and the movie starts at 7.  The cost is $10/person, and reservations are required!  Email dinner-and-a-movie@robertsstreet.org to reserve your spot.  (We only have room for 12 people at dinner, so make your reservation early!)

We are currently looking for presenters for winter 2011-12. Email us to book a Sunday where you can cook and show a film.

November 2011

November 6th
Presenters: Matthew
Film: Shock Treatment
Menu: Vegetarian Enchiladas and Hot Chili Brownies

You saw Rocky Horror last weekend, so why not see it's lesser known sequel this week!

In the continuing adventure of Brad and Janet Majors (Cliff De Young and Jessica Harper), their suburban hometown, Denton, U.S.A., has been transformed into a giant TV studio, where the brainwashed citizens remain happily glued to an endless series of soap operas, variety acts and game shows. But before you can say, 'We'll be right back after this,' the station's unscrupulous sponsor has locked Brad up in a mental hospital and recruited Janet to be the sexy star of her own hit show. Stay tuned for a shocking lineup of maniacal characters, biting satire and all-out fun!

March 2011

March 6
Presenters: Amanda and Zac
Film: Pump Up the Volume
Menu: Sweet potato and black bean tacos with homemade corn tortillas and all the fixings (vegan, gluten-free), Mexican hot chocolate (vegan option available if notified at time of reservation)

Nerdy high school student Mark (Christian Slater) moves to the suburbs and finds himself friendless and depressed, so he starts a pirate radio station in the basement of his parents' house.  Soon he begins to incite widespread rebellion among his listeners and attract the attention of the authorities.  Of course there's a little romance along the way and a lot of awesome music from the Pixies, the Descendents, Sonic Youth, and others.  Pump Up the Volume is the quintessential early 90s movie, predicting the rise of alternative youth culture through zines, punk rock, and maybe even the internet.

March 13
Presenter: Daniel MacKay
Film: Zero Patience
Menu: borscht, vegetarian "American chop suey", Red Velvet Cake and possibly a bloody alcoholic beverage.

Zero Patience, a 1993 Canadian musical film about AIDS -- specifically about the myth or reality of Halifax resident Gaetan Dugas, "Patient Zero" who, by some accounts, started the AIDS epidemic. Google for "gaetan dugas halifax" to see the local encyclopedia entry on him.  The musical is all-singing, all-dancing fun, and although completely irreverent, carefully written enough to make it thought-provoking these many years later.  The movie will be paired with bloodlike foods - borscht, vegetarian "American chop suey", Red Velvet Cake and possibly a bloody alcoholic beverage.

Spirited Away is a Japanese animated film about a 10-year-old girl who is transported into a world inhabited by spirits, gods and monsters through which she must find her way back to reality. The film for me is mostly about coming-of age, good & evil, and the changing Japanese culture/society. Children friendly!
