2.Empowerment through radical visual art- presented by Coco, artist-in-residence- Fri June 26, 4-6pm
Radical art: who makes it, who sees it and who can access it? This workshop will have three parts – a discussion, a radical street-art tour and the development of a radical visual art project. We’ll start by sharing experiences about the topic of public accessibility, DIY values and self-expression. After the discussion, we’ll walk around the North-End neighbourhood for a tour of the radical guerrilla street art in the area. We’ll then talk about the techniques and political issues that we want to explore and address relating specifically to the North-end neighbourhood of Halifax. In the last part of the workshop, we’ll start work on an artistic project for the North-End neighbourhood, which will reflect the values and ideas that we’ve discussed. Absolute beginners, accomplished artists and curious people all welcome.
Bio: Coco Riot is a genderqueer immigrant visual artist living in Montreal. Coco is one of this summer’s artists in residence at the Roberts Street Centre. Most of Coco’s work consists of zines, installations and videos addressing the questions of identity and community, especially within feminist and queer scenes. Coco has been publishing zines since 2003 and has put on exhibitions around europe and north america – both in political venues like ladyfests and the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, and various galleries and museums. Coco has also published several articles in art, queer and feminist magazines and is now working on an amazing installation-spoken word project with artist Luna Allison. (Coco also identifies as a drama king, which makes life so much more glamorous.)

3. Mitchell Wiebe’s performance (as part of the sound bites festival)- Saturday June 27, 4pm
Mitchell is going to set up a wicker structure in the backyard, and then do some kind of performance, and probably play some music.

4. Residents performance by Luna and Coco - Sun June 28, 2-5pm (visual art installation) 4pm (presentation/performance)
Residents Luna and Coco have been developing the ideas behind a collaborative multimedia installation, mostly consisting of drawings and spoken word, since October 2008. In this project, they’re exploring the importance of emotional expression in the pursuit of social change. There will be a visual art installation from 2-5pm on Sun June 28th, with a presentation / performance by Coco and Luna at 4pm. What they do is going to be a surprise…even to them. But we know that you won’t want to miss it. Because it will be rad.
5. SCAVENGER HUNT!!!! sorta... Sunday June 28th - 7pm
The reason it is sorta a scavenger hunt is because there will be more activities involved
than finding items. There will be different levels for different folks. It
will be arranged so that people on bikes as well as those not on
bikes will be able to participate. Basically, you will be in teams going
through a series of locations where you will have different things to do.
Everyone will be adequately supplied for such things. At the
very end everyone will end up at the same location and there will be
something there as well.

Bike teams and walking teams are welcome.

This is a call out for all those interested in participating to contact Jason.
Please register with teams so we know how many folks to expect.
If you don't have a team, still come out and we'll get you in a team.
Also, feel free to spread this along to others who may enjoy it.

7. Artists in Residence- Luna Allison (Ottawa) and Riot Coco (Montreal) and Macho (Winnipeg) – June 16-30 – John Weldon (Montreal) and Russel Edworthy (Calgary) June 27- July 14.
Luna and Coco are artists and activists who are working together on developing a multi-media installation project. While in Halifax they will work on a collaborative zine exploring inner and outer realities of seeking social chance as queer feminists. Using poetry, visual and print media, they will give voice to inner, personal life of the organizer, laying foundation for their larger collaborative project.

Macho’s going to come to Halifax to build a “Long John” style freight bicycle for us to use, as an awesome DIY alternative to car culture

John is an animator, filmmaker and comic artist who worked with the NFB for more than 30 years. He’s going to create a special Halifax issue of his Ashcan Alley comic book, and hold a screening of some of his film work.
Russel’s going to use the Ink Storm Screenprinting Studio to compile a compendium of information regarding Secret Space Inhabitants (monsters, creatures, denziens of Halifax and the Atlantic Shore). As a creative field guide, Russel will also host a campfire seminar introducing us to these little-known Secret Space Inhabitants.

We've extended the deadline to July 7th! It's time for NSPIRG to produce a new publication to provoke thought and action! As we revive our Rooting Out Racism campaign this summer, we are going to be producing the next phase of our "In Perspective" series: Racism in Perspective. While governments are moving away from using the term "racism" we invite you to call it as you see it, and to say it loud and clear. We are seeking an array of submissions to shed light on institutionalized racism in Nova Scotia, as well as on grander, global structures of inequality rooted in the concept of "race." We are looking for both non-fiction and fiction pieces; we encourage personal perspectives, essays, poetry, songs, comics, photos, drawings, and other artwork. Please get in touch if you have any questions or just to touch base with your ideas
