1.Finding your voice through your politics (spoken word)- presented by Luna, artist-in-residence- Wed June 24, 7-9pm
A two-hour spoken word workshop focused on finding your voice in the genre of spoken word through your political beliefs. We will listen to work by a number of spoken word artists from around north america, noticing which pieces we most respond to and then exploring and experimenting with the tools and techniques these artists use. Each person will have the option to write some spoken word based on the political issue or community work that is most important to them (i.e.: abortion rights, prison ally work, gentrification…). At the end of the workshop, participants can choose to share their work with the larger group or not. Beginners, bystanders and writers from other genres welcome.
Bio: Luna Allison is a queer feminist spoken word artist based in Ottawa who has been writing and performing poetry since 2001. She got her start in Montreal, where she also co-organized the Catcall series – a monthly women’s performance showcase featuring music, theatre, spoken word and dance, which is focused on providing space to new and emerging women artists to help them build skills, confidence and community. Luna released her first recording, Urban Lullabies, on the grassroots Montreal label Wired on Words in 2006 and has since toured around Canada and the U.S putting on shows and teaching workshops like this one. She is happy to be in Halifax this month, collaborating with Riot Coco as one of the Roberts Street Centre’s artists in residence. (Luna believes fiercely in the healing power of chocolate and likes to blow bubbles to get through writer’s block.)

2.Empowerment through radical visual art- presented by Coco, artist-in-residence- Fri June 26, 4-6pm
Radical art: who makes it, who sees it and who can access it? This workshop will have three parts – a discussion, a radical street-art tour and the development of a radical visual art project. We’ll start by sharing experiences about the topic of public accessibility, DIY values and self-expression. After the discussion, we’ll walk around the North-End neighbourhood for a tour of the radical guerrilla street art in the area. We’ll then talk about the techniques and political issues that we want to explore and address relating specifically to the North-end neighbourhood of Halifax. In the last part of the workshop, we’ll start work on an artistic project for the North-End neighbourhood, which will reflect the values and ideas that we’ve discussed. Absolute beginners, accomplished artists and curious people all welcome.
Bio: Coco Riot is a genderqueer immigrant visual artist living in Montreal. Coco is one of this summer’s artists in residence at the Roberts Street Centre. Most of Coco’s work consists of zines, installations and videos addressing the questions of identity and community, especially within feminist and queer scenes. Coco has been publishing zines since 2003 and has put on exhibitions around europe and north america – both in political venues like ladyfests and the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, and various galleries and museums. Coco has also published several articles in art, queer and feminist magazines and is now working on an amazing installation-spoken word project with artist Luna Allison. (Coco also identifies as a drama king, which makes life so much more glamorous.)

While governments are moving away from using the term "racism" we invite you to call it as you see it, and to say it loud and clear. We are seeking an array of submissions to shed light on institutionalized racism in Nova Scotia, as well as on grander, global structures of inequality rooted in the concept of "race."
