A documentary that talked to several incarcerated women and refuses to accept the false logic that people who have committed crimes are not worthy of human dignity. We'll talk a bit about what we do and there will be copies of "Words Without Walls: Writing and Artwork by Women in Prison in Nova Scotia" for sale.

6. Popular Education Series - Wed. May 6, 7pm - Kaley Kennedy - Never Again: a discussion on the struggle for reproductive rights in Nova Scotia
The history of the struggle for reproductive rights in Nova Scotia is definitely an interesting one. This workshop will give some historical context to pro-choice movements in Nova Scotia including the work of the five Nova Scotia Chapters of the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL) in the 1980s and early 1990s and the battle to get the government to fully fund abortions. The workshop will also give an overview of the current state of access to abortion in the province and provide a chance to discuss other challenges women in Nova Scotia are facing with regards to reproductive rights.
7. Annual springtime Roberts St. yard sale and Books Beyond Bars book sale! Sunday May 3, 10am-2pm.
We're having the (third or fourth?) annual Roberts Street/Books Beyond Bars yard sale fundraiser coming up. If you have extra books, clothes or other things (that are yard sale-worthy) around your house, drop them off in the backyard (on the shed porch) anytime in the next couple weeks. If you want to help by working the yard sale, please email us. Lots and lots of junk. I mean goodies.
8. Roberts Street Social Centre General Meeting - Tues. May 5, 7pm
A big old quarterly meeting to talk about everything that's going on. Committee reports, special projects, that kind of thing. Everyone is welcome to attend - it's a good introduction to what we do and how we work and what you might want to get involved doing!
9. Stitch and Bitch
Every Tuesday 7-9pm
Do some crafting and chatting with friendly folks.
10. Let's make a quilt!
In April there will be a box in the Zine Library to drop off your clothes (especially clothes you can't wear (too old) nor give away nor throw away (too special)) and scraps of fabric and extra patches. If a piece has a special story or memory attached to it, write it down and pin them together, we'll use these stories too!
In May we'll divide them up and make squares and assemble them again to make a beautiful quilt! Questions, ideas, comments, call Christine 405-7548
11. Crowd Control Sound & Art Fair - North St. Church, Sunday May 24, 12-4:30pm
This spring the Obey Convention will present a special celebration of DIY culture. 12. Call for musicians to collaborate on an improvised silent film score!
Garth Hardy is coming from Winnipeg to be our first Roberts Street resident of the year. Garth is an artist and musician who will create a collaborative, improvised score for a classic silent film that will be performed outdoors during the city wide Sound Bytes Festival. He’s looking for local musicians (any instruments) to collaborate with, and has chord change charts ready for C pitched instruments, Bb instruments, and if any are identified, Eb instruments. Want to help out? He's in town May 22-31. Please email anchorarchive@robertsstreet.org if you're interested.
