Maps, as we know them, were developed to help imperial powers like Rome and Britain understand and control distant territories; they have been inseparable from the exercise of political power ever since. This talk explores the connections between power and geographical knowledge by looking closely at three maps of Halifax, produced at different periods between the city's founding and the present.

Feb 25: Ami Harbin - "Sexual Disorientation"
We know what it means to be sexually oriented -- or we sometimes think we do -- but what might it mean to be sexually disoriented? We'll discuss sexual disorientation, consider its promise, and think about how being responsible might require being sexually disoriented.
Mar 11: Yuen-ying Carpenter - "Green Chemistry"
Chemistry and chemical industry are traditionally of as one of the least sustainability conscious fields, owing in part to a history of poor chemical waste management. Even now, when 95%+ of all manufactured goods involve at least one chemical process, some 80-90% of the raw material being consumed is converted merely to waste byproducts. Green Chemistry has emerged as a new way of looking at and doing chemistry, centring around the idea of PREVENTION. Come and learn about a few of the most recent and inspirational advances in green chemistry, and hopefully, leavewith a sense of both the world of possibility and possible challenges facing chemists in the world today.
Mar 25: Margaret Forsey - "The Journey of a Geinus"
Artist Margaret Forsey will gave a presentation on her experiences as artist in residence at the klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson City, Yukon. Her adventures include organizing queer pride events, turning dating into an art form, and causing a town scandal. There will be pictures!
Call for Popular Education Series Topics - Winter 2009
This winter Roberts Street is organizing a popular education series, featuring public lectures, film screenings, show n' tell and other kinds of presentations. You and anyone you know, are invited to make a presentation, host a discussion, share your talents and expertise in whatever topic you wish. The series is organized in the spirit of "stitch n' bitch" and "free-school" to provide free access to education and information, to inspire critical discussion, and to fight the winter blues.
