Larry Morgan: Exoplanets - Discovering New Worlds

Over the past 20 years the number of planets known to orbit stars other than the Sun (exoplanets) has exploded from a handful to hundreds. This area of research is now one of the fastest growing and most exciting topics in modern astronomy. New discoveries have been accompanied with changing attitudes regarding the possibility of life outside our solar system.  I intend to review the science behind the discovery of exoplanets, the future prospects for further discoveries and the relevance of this exciting field to current science, as well as the cultural implications of such research.

2. Stitch and Bitch - every Tuesday 7-9pm at Roberts Street
Bring a crafty project to work on in a fun social environment!

3. Semaphore Cinema Screening : "Last Call at the Gladstone Hotel"
& shorts by Deep Lez - Wednesday January 21, 7pm at Roberts Street

"When aggressive developers purchase a crumbling Toronto flophouse hotel,  to turn it into an arts and music hot spot, long-time staff and residents worry they'll be squeezed out. Christina Zeidler, an experimental filmmaker (Deep Lez), inherits the mess and forms a "business model that includes social change," but the hotel has the last word. Shot over five years in a cinema direct style, this intimate and compelling portrait of the effects of urban renewal upon the poor, reveals the unintentional roles we often play in gentrification." Semaphore Cinema will show films every second Wednesday in the Crow's Nest,  if you're interested in helping plan or choosing films, email and let us know.
