1. Semaphore Cinema - Wed. March 4, 7pm - "Please Vote for Me" China, 2007
From rottentomatoes.com: What happens when people who have never lived
in a democracy suddenly have the right to vote and, better yet, run
for office? PLEASE VOTE FOR ME explores this scenario, by chronicling
the first open elections for school monitor in a third-grade class in
central China. A pair of boys and one girl vie for the office,
indulging in classic political moves, including low blows,
spin-doctoring, character assassination, and gestures of goodwill,
adjusting their tactics as they guage their standing with voters. The
result: a witty, engaging micro-lens view of human nature, China's
one-child policy, and the democratic electoral process.

2. Dinner & a Movie - Sunday March 11, 6pm - Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Come out for a Roberts Street fundraiser! Watch Pee Wee's Big Adventure (best bicycle movie of all time) on a big(gish) screen and have dinner cooked for you and served! Because food and space are limited we're going to ask people to reserve spots ahead of time by emailing semaphorecinema@gmail.com. Dinner will be $8 per person.

3. Popular Education Series - Wed. March 11, 7pm: Yuen-ying Carpenter - "Green Chemistry"
roberts street social centre, 446-1788, 5684 Roberts Street
Chemistry and chemical industry are traditionally of as one of the
least sustainability conscious fields, owing in part to a history of
poor chemical waste management. Even now, when 95%+ of all
manufactured goods involve at least one chemical process, some 80-90%
of the raw material being consumed is converted merely to waste
byproducts. Green Chemistry has emerged as a new way of looking at and
doing chemistry, centring around the idea of PREVENTION. Come and
learn about a few of the most recent and inspirational advances in
green chemistry, and hopefully, leave with a sense of both the world
of possibility and possible challenges facing chemists in the world
today.

4. Printed Matter Matters - March Break Art Camp!
- What is it? A series of art classes during March Break! Learn new
skills and try them out with special guest teachers - screenprinting,
zine making, lino block printing, bookbinding, flipbooks, comics and
more. You get to do all kinds of stuff, as well as work on a final
project that could include posters, t-shirts, textile patterns,
wallpaper, card designs, blockprinting, art books, zines, comics, or
anything else! At the end of the camp we'll have a special exhibit to
share everything with our friends and family.
- When is it? It'll be Monday March 16 to Friday March 20, 10am-3pm
- Who is it for? Teenagers!
- Where is it? The camp will be at the Roberts Street Social Centre,
5684 Roberts Street in the North End of Halifax. It is a
collectively-run building that includes the Anchor Archive Zine
Library and Ink Storm Screenprinting Collective, and is lots of fun.
- Why do it? That's what you need to tell us. Please email
anchorarchive@robertsstreet.org and we'll send you a short application
to fill out. The camp is free and all materials are provided, thanks to support
from the NS Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

Media Co-op Tour - including Roberts St!

With the death of the Daily News and major layoffs at the
Chronicle-Herald, it is becoming clear that advertising is failing as
a way to fund journalism that truly informs the public.

The Halifax Local of the Media Co-op is a democratically-run,
reader-funded news outlet. It will provide an opportunity for a
diverse membership to participate in deciding what stories are covered
and shaping how they will be covered. In addition to creating a
democratic, participatory form of news gathering, the Local will also
be dedicated to publishing high-quality, professional journalism that
builds off the information gathered by participants.

Media Co-op organizers from Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver are
currently touring the neighbourhoods of Halifax to discuss their plans
to get the Halifax Local up and running. They are speaking to groups
and individuals, signing up supporting members, asking people about
their concerns with media coverage, and explaining how to get involved
and support the co-op.

For a preview version of the Halifax Media Co-op, visit:

Excepting the Media Maker Workshop, all events consist of a 30 minute

All the best from the Media Co-op crew!

Calling all knitters and crafters - Knit-a-Thon!

In collaboration with CKDU's Homelessness Marathon, the 4-hour
national radio program on poverty in Canada we will be having a
KNIT-A-THON!

February 23, 2009 from 7 PM- 8 AM

The knit-a-thon is a fundraiser for the "Out Of the Cold Emergency

you don't have to knit all night! And if you have never knitted before
this is the perfect opportunity to learn, we will have yarn, needles
and skill sharing. Hot food and hot drinks will be provided to keep
you going!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Larry Morgan: Exoplanets - Discovering New Worlds

Over the past 20 years the number of planets known to orbit stars other than the Sun (exoplanets) has exploded from a handful to hundreds. This area of research is now one of the fastest growing and most exciting topics in modern astronomy. New discoveries have been accompanied with changing attitudes regarding the possibility of life outside our solar system.  I intend to review the science behind the discovery of exoplanets, the future prospects for further discoveries and the relevance of this exciting field to current science, as well as the cultural implications of such research.

"When aggressive developers purchase a crumbling Toronto flophouse hotel,  to turn it into an arts and music hot spot, long-time staff and residents worry they'll be squeezed out. Christina Zeidler, an experimental filmmaker (Deep Lez), inherits the mess and forms a "business model that includes social change," but the hotel has the last word. Shot over five years in a cinema direct style, this intimate and compelling portrait of the effects of urban renewal upon the poor, reveals the unintentional roles we often play in gentrification." Semaphore Cinema will show films every second Wednesday in the Crow's Nest,  if you're interested in helping plan or choosing films, email and let us know.
